Major Hospitals use Trances for...
Fractures, Cancer and Burns, Speeding Surgery Recoveries
The Wall Street Journal - 2003 October 7, Tuesday
by Michael Waldholz
Hypnosis, often misunderstood an almost always controversial, is
increasingly being employed in mainstream medicine.
Numerous scientific studies have emerged in recent years showing that
the hypnotized mind can exert a real and powerful effect on the body.
The new findings are leading major hospitals to try hypnosis to help
relieve pain and speed recovery in a variety of illnesses. At the
University of North Carolina, hypnosis is transforming the treatment
of irritable bowel syndrome, and often-intractable gastro-intestinal
disorder, by helping patients to use their mind to quiet an unruly
gut. Doctors at the University of Washington's regional burn center
in Seattle regularly use it to help patients alleviate excruciating
pain. Several hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School are
employing hypnosis to speed up post surgical recovery time. In one of
the most persuasive studies yet, a Harvard researcher reports that
hypnosis quickened the typical healing time of bone fractures by
several weeks.
"Hypnosis may sound like magic, but we are now producing evidence
showing it can be significantly therapeutic, " says David Spiegel, a
Stanford University psychologist, "We know it works but we don't
exactly know how, though there is some science beginning to figure
that out, too."
Hypnosis can't help everyone, many practitioners say, and some
physicians reject it entirely. Even those who are convinced of its
effect say some people are more hypnotizable than others, perhaps
based on an individual's willingness to suspend logic or to simply be
open to the potential effectiveness of the process.
These days, legitimate hypnosis is often performed by psychiatrists
an psychologists though people in other medical specialties are
becoming licensed in it, too. It can involve just one session, but
often it takes several - or listening to a tape in which a therapist
guides an individual into a trance-like state. Whatever the form it
is increasingly being used to help women give birth without drugs,
for muting dental pain, treating phobias and severe anxieties, for
helping people lose weight, stop smoking or even perform better in
athletics or academic tests. Many health-insurance plans, even some
HMOs, now will pay for hypnosis when part of an accepted medical
treatment.
Until the last decade, many traditional science journals regularly
declined to publish hypnosis studies, and research funding was
scarce. That's changing. Dr. Spiegel, for instance, is co-author of a
widely referenced randomized trial involving 241 patients at several
prestigious medical centers. Published several years ago in the
Lancet, a respected medical journal, it found that patients
hypnotized before surgery required less pain medication, sustained
fewer complications an left the hospital faster than a similar group
not given hypnosis.
Using new imaging and brain wave measuring tools, Helen Crawford, and
experimental psychologist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in
Blacksburg, Va., Has shown that hypnosis alters brain function,
activating specific regions that control a person's ability and it
can be quantified, "Dr. Crawford says.
Still, proponents say they typically spend a great deal of time
dispelling commonly held myths and answering skeptics. Hypnosis they
say, can not make people do or say something against their will.
Credible hypnotists don't wave a watch in front of their clients, as
portrayed in many old movies. People who enter into a so-called
hypnotic trance are not, generally, put to sleep. On the contrary,
practitioners say, they refocus their concentration to gain greater
control.
Even so, the field continues to be hurt by quacks, says Marc Oster,
president of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. His group,
along with the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis,
publishes research studies, conducts educational seminars for health
providers and certifies those who complete course work and meet other
standards. Dr. Oster suggests that people interested in hypnosis see
a health provider licensed in a medical discipline, who is also
certified by one of he hypnosis societies - someone who "uses
hypnosis as an adjunct" to a principal medical practice.
Everyday Trances
Researchers say that most people unwillingly enter into hypnosis like
trances on their own in everyday life. When reading a riveting novel
or watching a film or TV, many people are experiencing a trance-like
state when they are so focused they become only vaguely aware of
nearby noise, conversation or activity. In a dream, when someone
imagines falling off a cliff and is startled awake by the sensation
of falling, they are triggering the same mental machinery that in
hypnosis allows the mind to influence the body, says Dabney Ewin, a
psychiatrist at Tulane University Medical School.
Katie Miley used self-hypnosis taught to her by a Chicago area
psychologist to help her give birth "without being so anxious and
without pain medication." For weeks preceding the delivery Dr. Miley
herself a psychologist, used tapes provided by the therapist to
practiced slipping into a hypnotic state. During the birth, and as
suggested by the therapist, she muted the pain by imagining the
contractions "as a warm blanket enveloping me." She says.
"It was weird," she says. "I was aware of everyone in the room and I
was interacting, but mentally my focus was elsewhere. And I just
allowed the process to unfold."
Some of the clearest clinically measured results come form using
hypnosis to mute severe and chronic pain - as the University of
Washington's regional burn-treatment center in Seattle is doing with
burn patients. Patients sent there must undergo frequent therapy to
sterilize their damaged skin, and get new grafts. They must be awake
and alert during the treatment, and even the most powerful narcotic
rarely diminish the intense pain.
David Patterson, a psychologist at the center, induces a hypnotic
trance with a typical and relatively quick technique. Patients are
told to close their eyes, breath deeply, and imagine they are
floating. Through a variety of verbal suggestion, Dr. Patterson then
helps the patient imagine themselves elsewhere, away from the
treatment. "The pain is still there, of course, but patients simply
don't experience it as before, "he says.
While relieving physical pain is one of the more common uses of
hypnotism, it is also the hardest to explain. Dr. Patterson and
others report that hypnosis doesn't appear to act on the body's
natural pain-killing chemicals, the way drugs do. Instead, scientists
believe, through hypnosis a person can be trained to focus away from
the pain, not on it as most people usually do. Many athletes often
unconsciously use such a technique to play through severe pain,
concentrating their attention on the game or tasks ahead, instead of
on their injury.
Recently, Dr. Patterson added another tool to transport hypnotized
patients to a "safer emotional environment. " He and his colleagues
created a virtual reality film; patients placed in a helmet during
therapy watch a three-dimensional depiction of a snow-covered set of
mountains and canyons. By interaction with the film, patients can
feel they are suspended over a cool and calming world. Michael "Mac"
MacAneny, one of the first burn patients to use the 3-D film, says he
is certain that "it saved my life."
Early last year, Mr. MacAneny sustained deep burns over 58% of his
body when building a bonfire for his sons in his backyard. A gas tank
he was using suddenly exploded, enveloping him in flames. Before Dr.
Patterson began treating him, the 39-year Mr. MacAneny says he
dreaded his daily therapy, "freaking out" whenever the nurses came to
get him. Hypnotized and inside the 3-D virtual world, "I knew what
was going on, but I just didn't pay attention to it," he says.
Hypnosis, is some form or another, has been used for more than 200
years. It began gaining credibility as a medical tool in the early
decades of the last century as psychiatry and psychoanalysis began to
show how the unconscious mind often rules daily life. Its usefulness
was cemented when combat physicians reported using it during World
War II for the wounded.
By 1958, as more doctors described their experiences in the war, the
American Medical Association certified the technique as a legitimate
treatment tool. Nevertheless, few doctors employed it. But in 1996, a
National Institutes of Health panel ruled hypnosis as an effective
intervention for alleviation pain from cancer and other chronic
conditions. These days, as many people accept that stress can
exacerbate illness, the potential curative power of hypnosis is
becoming more acceptable, too.
Healing the Body
Carol Ginandes, a Harvard psychologist at McLean Hospital in Boston,
is trying to prove that "through hypnosis, the mind can have a potent
effect not only on mental well-being but also on the acceleration of
bodily healing itself." She has co-written a study showing ankle
fractures among patients receiving a hypnotic protocol healed weeks
faster than usual and another study showing wound-healing benefits
for hypnotized breast -cancer surgery patients. Though these studies
were preliminary, Dr. Ginandes believes that hypnosis enabled her
subject to stimulate the body's own healing mechanism to work more
efficiently.
Elvira Lang, director of interventional radiology at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, has made similar findings. She
recently reported that hypnotized patients who must remain awake
during certain vascular and kidney procedures fared measurably better
than similar patients who didn't undergo hypnosis. Still, says Dr.
Lang, until very recently, "I didn't dare use the 'H' word around
here."

Dear Gary,
Here are the results of the latest research I have done with live blood cells and EFT.
I was inspired to do this by the work of the Japanese researcher, Masaru Emoto, who photographed pictures of frozen water crystals imbued with different emotions. His work is quite astonishing and wonderful and I recommend you read his book, The Hidden Messages in Water.
Anyway, I tried to duplicate Mr. Emotos experiments but found the water crystals melted under the hot light of the darkfield microscope before we (Dr Felici and I) could get a look at them.
OK-I am the first to admit I am no scientist. However, I sure am a pioneer and I love to try new experiments with everything. If you never try for fear of failure, you dont get anything!
So, I had a backup plan.
While the water crystals experiment did not work , Dr Felici and I had previously done some experiments with live blood and EFT. We were certain we could get good pictures of my blood.
So, the plan was to use EFT to invite one emotion at a time into my energy field and thus into my body and into my blood. Dr Felici would take a blood sample after each different emotion and we would take a look at the sample under the darkfield microscope.
I had never purposely invited negative energies into myself; however, I really allowed the emotions to be very powerful within me. I used EFT with the INTENT that whatever emotion I was inviting in would be very powerful indeed.
Before we began with the emotions, I asked Dr Felici to take a look at my blood as it looked normally. Well, folks, I had eaten 2 things for lunch that caused lectins to form in my blood and clumped my red blood cells together horribly! I am B POSITIVE blood type and am not supposed to eat chicken or avocados (should have cleared those allergens beforehand with EFT). Anyway, I had to do EFT to fix my blood so I could get good readings for the emotions. Since I had done this twice before, it was a piece of cake! Here are darkfield microscopy pictures of my blood cells before and after EFT. Please note the astonishing and immediate change from being clumped to being free and mobile.

After I used EFT to clear my blood, we were ready to begin.
The first emotion I invited in was the energy of sadness. I did EFT and thought of many sad things. I got into it so deeply that I was even crying. I did not wait any time at all but allowed Dr Felici to take a blood sample that very moment. EFT works really fast you know! Here is the picture.

Understand that when you look at blood on a darkfield microscope, the sample is alive and still moving. Dr Felici has seen this movement many, many times. However, she had never seen the movement like the sample moved with the energy of sadness!
You would think the blood cells would be all slow and plodding but NO! The cells were moving very rapidly (that why they look so far apart) and a lot of white blood cells were predominant, much more so than when we just did a normal blood sample. Another thing that is quite unusual is that many of the red blood cells took on a teardrop formation! Perhaps there is some scientific reason this happened, I do not know. I just know what I saw on the computer screen attached to the microscope.
Next, using EFT, I invited the energy of LOVE to come into my body and blood. When we placed the sample under the microscope, the cells were moving all placidly and beautifully. The shape of the cells was normal but you can notice there is a bit of some sparkly substance in the fluid of the blood.

On an interesting note, we had left the sadness sample on the screen as I was doing EFT to invite LOVE in to my blood. The sample on the screen started to change as well. Even when our blood is out of our body, we are still connected to it.

Next, I invited the energy of FEAR into my blood. (see above photo) I allowed myself to remember a time when I was very frightened and really got into the emotional state, using EFT to assist me. I placed the sample pictures of LOVE and FEAR close together so you could see how the LOVE sample cuddles together and how the FEAR sample seems to spread a lot further apart.
Remember it was my INTENT to allow myself to feel all these emotions.
When we placed the energy of FEAR under the microscope, the cells were just going crazy! They were moving much faster even that with the energy of sadness! There were also a whole lot more of the white blood cells showing than in any of the other samples. I took it to mean that when your body feels a threat it sends out the soldiers to fight any perceived danger. Interestingly enough, the cells were really going crazy but came to a standstill very quickly. Perhaps, it was an adrenaline response and it ran out of gas quickly.
(Before you read this next paragraph, please know that I am not of a certain religion and I am not espousing any certain religion this is simply my personal experience.)
I felt I needed something heavy duty to calm my poor blood cells down so I brought out the big gun of my own belief system- The energy of Divine Mother! Now when I say Divine Mother, I am speaking from my personal belief system that there is a Divine Feminine energy that is the nurturing, mothering part of God. It is my belief that Her energy comes through many of the Deities in many religions and indeed in the nurturing part of all of us. I am not asking anyone to believe as I do, I am simply stating my views for clarification on the experiment. I could have (and have done since) asked Jesus, Holy Spirit, and even Buddha to assist me. The point I am making is that I asked an energy I perceived to be Divine to come into my body and blood.
I must share with you that when I asked the energy of Divine Mother to come into me I had great waves of energy all over my body. It was such a very tender and precious feeling that I was crying tears of pure joy.
When we placed the sample under the microscope and the image came up on the screen there was dead silence in the laboratory.
You could have heard a pin drop!

The sample was so different from any of the others. The fluid part of the blood was very clear, the movement of the cells was so placid, and the cells were just gliding along in peace. There was a great deal of white, yet beyond white, sparkly substance interspersed with the cells. The white blood cells that showed each had a white, glowing center and a pulsation in that center almost like a little heartbeat!
It was like looking into a parallel universe.
Myself, Dr Felici, the technician, and my daughter (who was filming) just could not stop looking at that sample. As long as we left the sample on the screen, it had life. All the other samples started to slow down after a short period of time but the Divine Mother sample did not. Another interesting thing that happened and it shows up in the photograph, was that some of the red blood cells began to take on a heart shape. This is not 2 cells overlapping but single cells taking on this shape. I have included 2 of these pictures taken at different positions on the sample slide.
So what have I proved by this experiment?
- That EFT can enhance any emotion and bring it about quickly with all the physical ramifications as well.
- That you can INTEND and use EFT to enhance even a negative emotion.
- That different emotions affect the blood in profound ways.
- That you can fix many emotions with INTENT and EFT.
- For me, the most astonishing thing this experiment proves is that the Divine can come into your blood and this could be used for all kinds of reasons. Perhaps, using EFT in this manner simply stimulates the Divine that is already inherent in all of us.
I do not know the answers to many questions. I will keep doing experiments in the hopes of helping and inspiring us all.
With much love,
Rebecca Marina
Do You Have the Courage
As you choose to grow at a soul level you will find the “friends and colleagues who are trying to manipulate you, or who are jealous of your growth (due to their own insecurities), will object to your empowerment and attempt to dislodge you from your path.
These less than ideal souls have a perfect right to behave this way, but it is your responsibility to see to it that their “behavior” doesn’t victimize you. Can you think of any healthy reason that anyone would object to your empowerment?
The most important point to remember is that your empowerment will never come at the expense of another. I am not advocating that you become a more selfish, ruthless, manipulative soul. However, it would be advisable to always be keenly aware of the dynamics of everyone around you, objectively evaluating the intent and quality of their actions or inactions
As you become empowered, possibly through an illness or other hardship you will find that you are melding into a body, mind, and spirit functioning together as a growth oriented being.
As your being (body, mind and spirit) restores or remembers oneness with the universe, creator, God, you are remembering oneness, wholeness and holiness.
As you move toward this empowerment you begin to let go of resistance, learn to love yourself fully correcting your relationships with God and find your way home.
To do this you need to be able to heal the wounds we all carry. Emotional issues that we sometimes are not aware of, but are influencing our reactions to everyday occurrences and interfering with our empowerment, need to be cleared so we may move forward in our journey to be closer to God, the Universe and wholeness.
Taking responsibility for whatever exists or occurs in one’s life is very empowering. If you created a mess, presumably you can reverse it or activate a correcting action that will modify the situation.
In the short term, taking full responsibility can cause extreme guilt, remorse, and self –recrimination. Much of this comes from old, tradition-bound attitudes about a harsh judgmental God, or similarly harsh authority figures that have become internalized.
The first condition for self empowerment is that you must desire it. You must desire more energy, more enjoyment, more fulfillment and more happiness in your life.
Stress is only a resistance created by our defense mechanisms, by our need to control, justify or even understand an event. Learning not to judge events and situations is a great and noble part of empowering yourself.
God has given us many tools to accomplish this empowerment and letting go. Until we can release the emotions that are tying us to the resistance, self doubt and sometime self hatred, we cannot truly be empowered as God has intended us to be. Anger, jealousy, envy, guilt, low self esteem, feelings of inadequacy, martyrdom, hate, greed to name a few, are stumbling blocks to our growth. As we see the need to let these go we will also see the many tools that God has provided us with to help us eliminate these emotions.
God did not tell us he would fix everything for us. He gives us free will and with that free will he gives messages or bright ideas to some of the population to bring to earth tools that will help us to grow closer to him. He does not force us to use them, he is very patient and waits for us to recognize that the tools are there and can be used to clear the emotions or incidences in our life that are blocking us from reaching a higher level or consciousness and thus being closer to him/her.
Some of these tools are Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture, Massage, EFT, and Psychology. The key to using these tools is, do they eliminate the problem or just give you some relief from the symptoms. The main focus should be on eliminating the problem not the symptoms. If you make the symptoms better you still have the underlying problem which can just come back in another set of symptoms.
Recent studies show how common occurrences in everyday life have an effect on us internally. These studies demonstrate how problems in everyday life can affect our bodies, minds and spirits:
A view of nature from your hospital window can contribute more to recovery from surgery than many drugs.
A divorce has nearly the same impact on heart disease as smoking one or more packs of cigarettes a day.
People under negative stress are six times more likely to become infected with a cold virus and twice as likely to develop cold symptoms
A study at the University of
Couples with severe marital problems experienced elevated blood pressure and heart rates, and showed a significantly depressed immune response The more negative the behavior, the more pronounced the immunological deficiency became.
Reiki used in hospital around the
Hospitals that allow therapy animals in to see the patients, find that the animals have a calming and healing effect.
Many alternative healing practices when combined with allopathic medicine can help the patients heal at an accelerated rate and clear many of the emotional issues and fears attached to the cause of the illness or the illness it self.
As we begin our journey into empowerment we begin to notice the changes that we need to make the decision for ourselves and let go of the emotions that are holding us back and we find that we desire a release from them.. Baby steps are alright because we are moving in an upwards direction. Any work that we do on our personal growth path is going to help us move to the next level in our consciousness’ evolution.
When we can see the world around us without the negative emotions inside of us we can understand how we are all connected at a soul level and that what we do and think influences those around us. We can become the example of how to live a more balanced life and those around us can learn from our example.
"There are two ways of spreading light:
to be the candle,
or the mirror that reflects it".
Edith Wharton
Every step that we make in this direction, even baby steps, makes a difference in “spreading the light”. My challenge to you is to find a way by Tai Chi, Hypnotherapy, EFT (Emotional Freedom), Yoga, , Acupuncture or some other method, to start releasing the negative emotions that you have held onto and begin your journey toward “Spreading the Light or Mirroring the Light”. For every single negative emotion that you let go of you are making a tremendous difference in the collective mind of the world. You are changing the emotional “pool” of the people around you, in the
Are you brave enough to let the anger, resentment, jealousy, hate, greed, selfishness, and so on go? Are these emotions not the same ones that are causing the wars in the
If you think about your children and the emotional baggage that you are bestowing on them by example, do you want them to have this legacy of emotions to distort their world? Children learn by example and osmosis. They learn by hearing and watching You. When we are Not willing to let go of the negative emotions we are really saying it is OK to have all the negativity in the world and you will just be a part of it . Do you want them to feel the way you do or do you want them to be free of the negativity and have love, compassion, and caring for the people around them and their fellow man..
. It only takes a little determination and courage to take that first step in freeing yourself from negativity and live a balanced life.

Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, and Hypnotherapists
What is Hypnosis?
The brain operates in four general states determined by the frequency of the electricity generated by the exchange of chemicals in the neural pathways. The four states include Full Conscious Awareness, the Hypnotic State, the Dream State, and the Sleep State.
These four states correspond to electrical activity in the brain and are defined by frequency ranges on an EEG. Full Conscious Awareness occurs when the majority of the electrical activity in the brain is in the beta range (14-35 Hz). The Hypnotic State occurs when brain activity is in the alpha range (8-13 Hz). The Dream State occurs when brain activity is in the theta range (4-7 Hz), and the Sleep State occurs when brain activity is in the delta range (.5-3 Hz).
Full Conscious Awareness is where which we spend most of our waking hours. In this state, our mind is attentive and uses logic to reason, evaluate, assess, judge, and make decisions. Unfortunately, when making life changes, the conscious mind often gets in the way.
In the Hypnotic State, the doorway between the conscious and the subconscious is opened, memories become easily accessible, and new information is stored. In the Hypnotic State, you are not really "thinking" in the traditional sense. You are "experiencing" without questioning, without critical judgment or analysis, like when you watch a movie, and the hypnotherapist can make suggestions that are very likely to "stick" - precisely because your conscious mind is not getting in the way. You are not "judging" or being "critical" of the suggestions.
We pass through all four bands sequentially as the electrical activity decreases on our way to sleep and as it increases up on our way to total wakefulness. Regardless of whether we are on our way to sleep or to wakefulness, when we pass through the upper theta/lower alpha range we go into hypnosis automatically. There is no power on earth that can stop it from happening but likewise, there is no person or power on earth that can force you into it; you must want to go into hypnosis and follow the hypnotist's direction to the letter.
The will located in the conscious way of functioning is always present, always working. If for some reason you will yourself not to allow the suggestions to be accepted, they won't be. The smoker who comes in to quit smoking but is not really committed to that goal, cannot be forced to do so.
As to the issue of the subconscious' chief concern for the clients' health and welfare, the subconscious function of the mind begins to operate long before the conscious mind, in early childhood. On the level of instinct, the strategies for self-preservation and survival are irrevocably etched in the subconscious.
The conscious along with its critical faculty develops later in early childhood. By this time, the subsconscious had firmly embedded in it the instinct to survive---to keep the organism well and healthy.
A less technical definition of hypnosis is: A naturally occurring altered state of consciousness in which the critical faculty is bypassed (mind in the conscious mode) and acceptable selective thinking established.
This simply means that the reasoning, evaluating, judging part of your mind (conscious) is bypassed. While we wonder how this could possibly happen, we are subject to it all the time. The advertising industry is dedicated to bypassing our critical judgment all the time in order to influence our buying behavior.
We suspend our critical judgment other times when an authority figure makes some sort of comment; doctors, clergy, professors, and many more fall into this category.
Children suspend their critical judgment frequently in games of "let's pretend". Actors do it in playing a part; they have to suspend their critical faculty, and they ask the audience to suspend theirs to accept them as being someone else.
With the critical faculty bypassed, specific thoughts/suggestions can be lodged in the subconscious where they can propel the client toward a desired goal or change behavior in a positive, permanent way. Any such suggestions must be acceptable to the client, of course. They would have no effect otherwise.
This focus on a specific goal or behavior is done with laser-like precision and intensity in hypnosis. It's a little like looking through a telescope from the wrong end. You see just one tiny spec of the environment in focus though you may be aware of everything around it.
